Yesterday was a major win for California hybrid cats!
The California Fish And Game Commission met yesterday and voted to reject the petition to ban hybrid cats in California!
A big thank you to all who helped make this happen and supported us in our time of need.
So
many signed the petition, many called CA F&W, wrote emails and
letters and even attended the meetings. What an awesome community of cat
lovers we have.
Education About Savannah Cats Rather Than Banning Them
What is a Savannah Cat? Savannah cats originated from crossing a domestic cat with an African Serval. The Savannah is smaller than it's Serval ancestor (typically between 14-20 lbs - smaller than most dogs in many homes) but has the Serval's beautiful shape and markings plus the personality of the domestic cat.
Savannah cats are loving and playful cats. They have more energy then any other cat I have been around. Our cat will out-play our Bengals, who are also very high energy cats. A happy Savannah will give lots of head butts when petted and loves attention from their people. They love to climb and we have great shelves and cat trees in our home for a lot of satisfaction of our cat's needs.

Their funny cat antics keep us laughing
They typically are not what you would call lap cats. Some don't go on laps at all. Ours does when he is in the mood. If I try to pet him when he is on me he will get up. He doesn't like being picked up either. But he will be close and snuggle on his terms. I cherish our close times.
Here you can see him on my thigh as I am typing away on my laptop.
He is very curious when we have visitors, always polite, he sniffs around and then will allow some pets from our visitors. If I bring out the feather toy, he will run around and play for our visitors too.
They love interactive toys like the feather toy and ours even plays catch with the ball. He follows you all over the house, does not like to be alone or shut out of the room, he wants to be with is people. He snuggles up on the bed next to us at night too. He is such a joy to have in our life.
This website is a great resource to learn more from people who own Savannah Cats. Lots of wonderful photos and videos at home with their families. They are truly a member of your family when you have a Savannah Cat live with you.
Please write to California Fish and Wildlife and tell them this ban is wrong. I am posting a link here for my previous blog post where I have all the addresses to write too. We need them to hear from you and thank you.
Also if you haven't signed the petition to try and stop this, please do, it is also posted on this blog post About Hybrid Cats - Educate Don't Legislate Part 1
Education About Our Wonderful Cats Rather Than Banning Them
When people are uninformed it is easy to make the wrong decision about something. Most people do not know much about the behavior of hybrid cats. There are some groups that work mainly with large wild cats, big cats like Lions and Tigers who are spreading fear about these cats in a campaign to have them banned. They specifically targeted Bengal Cats, Savannahs Cats, Chausie and Serengeti Cats.
Here is some information about the Bengal Cat.
These cats are the result of naturally crossing a small wild cat that is about 10-15 lbs, (ALC) with a domestic cat which results in a companionable domestic house cat with the beautiful coloring of the wild cat. When raised with a loving family these cats are love bugs just like your little moggy tabby cat.
The Bengal cat typical size can be from 6 to 15 lbs, just like any other house cat. Bengal cats have lots of energy, they love to play and climb. They are usually very vocal, but not every one is. They eat regular cat food and use the litterbox.
You can here Mr Mazi's talkative meow on this video.

They are the smartest cats I have ever had and just enjoy them so much. They like to be with their people and will go to whichever room your are in and try to be involved in whatever you are doing. They are pretty funny with their cute kitty antics.
I have never ever had any experience with aggression from my cats. They are very affectionate and very in tune with their people. I get daily purrs and cuddles from them and they are just the perfect cat to be a member of our family.
Here is what The International Cat Association says about Bengal Cats:

There is a movement to ban hybrid cats in California.
I cannot believe I have to report to you this horrible event that is unfolding before my eyes. Several groups are pushing to have California Fish And Wildlife ban hybrid cats from this state.
I started writing my blog in May of 2008, shortly after adding our two Bengal cats, Kali and Mazi to our family and shortly after that, our Savannah cat boy, Simba. Over the years they have shared some of their silly antics and fun stories and even dressed in costume to make you smile.
We may have to leave this state, the state I was born in and have lived all my live. I am very sad that our land is loosing so many freedoms. Where will it stop?
Our family and friends love our cats, they have even been camping with us. They love people and children.
As with any cat, there is an exception to that rule, just watch Animal Planet and see the domestic house cats that Jackson Galaxy helps families to resolve cat problems.
Banning is not the answer!
Please sign the petition to help us be saved from being banned on the link below.
Mom was working in the kitchen and Mr Simba had fallen asleep on the table in the sunshine coming through the blinds. She heard some huff and puff kind of noises and saw him all twitchy. It sounded like he was excited and trying to get something, maybe running in his sleep in a dream?
